#30 | Survivor-Driven Change: Thomas Keown Brings Justice to Children Internationally
Fifteen years ago Thomas Keown was working as a journalist when he stumbled upon children suffering from injustice, poverty and indignity in the slums of Kenya. Appalled by the magnitude of suffering, he founded Many Hopes to create systemic change, and fifteen years later he is expanding his efforts globally.
Believing that children who have survived abusive lives of slavery, trafficking, or destitution can become powerful agents of change if nutured and supported, Thomas and his team designed Many Hopes to create lasting systemic change and solve deeply entrenched problems not just in Kenya, but around the world.
“Many Hopes exists in the world for one reason and one reason only: “To rescue children from situations of injustice and equip them to become the adults who can do that for other people if they choose to.” Thomas Keown
In this episode, Thomas explains how his team works with carefully chosen local individuals in six countries who have experienced hardship themselves and are passionate about creating a better world for children. Using a 6-stage child development framework that rescues, nurtures, educates, inspires, empowers, and supports children in crisis, they have already seen many successes that prove their plan is working.

Recognizing that charity hasn’t relieved abuse and childhood suffering, Thomas and his team set out to change the paradigm. After all, if more than a trillion dollars in charity hasn’t been significantly impactful, and 258 million children still can’t access a decent education, continuing to throw more money to corrupt officials or ineffective charity programs is not the answer.
This is a story about facing reality, acknowledging that lasting change will take forty to fifty years to take hold, and having the courage and boldness to commit to the process. And the heart to make it so.
